WHAT IS A URINARY TRACT INFECTION?

A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common condition caused by bacteria entering the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, or kidneys. It can cause discomfort and, if untreated, can lead to more serious complications.

COMMON SYMPTOMS (BLADDER INFECTION)

  • Burning sensation or pain during urination

  • Frequent urge to urinate, even if little comes out

  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine

  • Pressure in the groin or lower abdomen areas

Common Symptoms (Kidney Infection) -- More serious and could require a referral to a higher level of care.

  • Pain in the lower back or side

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Fever or chills

RISK FACTORS

UTIs are more common in females. This makes it easier for bacteria to enter the urinary tract.

Other risk factors:

  • A previous UTI.

  • Recent sexual activity.

  • Changes in the bacteria that live inside the vagina or vaginal flora. For example, menopause or using spermicides can cause these bacterial changes.

  • Pregnancy.

  • Age (older adults and young children are more likely to get UTIs).

  • Structural problems in the urinary tract, such as enlarged prostate.

  • Poor hygiene, for example, in children who are potty-training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@docnptelehealth.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Can a UTI go away on its own without treatment?

While mild UTIs might resolve on their own, most require treatment with antibiotics to prevent the infection from spreading or causing complications. Seeking timely care ensures a faster recovery and reduces the risk of recurring infections.

How is a UTI diagnosed during a virtual visit?

During your virtual visit, the provider will ask detailed questions about your symptoms, medical history, and any prior UTIs. The healthcare provider may sometimes advise you to complete a urine test at a nearby lab, but many UTIs can be diagnosed and treated based on your reported symptoms alone.
